How this works (the honest bit). Around eight drinks a day, two minutes each - so about one per cent of the world is mid-sip at any moment. The volume assumes 2.5 litres of fluid per person per day, which covers everything from water to tea and is a rough global average. Every figure on this page is a model built from population data, each country's local clock and the assumptions above. It is an estimate, it moves every second, and at least one of them is certainly true.

Why do we get thirsty?

Thirst measures concentration, not how much water is left. That one distinction explains almost everything odd about drinking.

  1. The sensors watch concentration. Osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus monitor how concentrated your blood has become. Thirst is triggered by rising concentration rather than by a low tank - which is why eating salt makes you thirsty without a drop of water having been lost.
  2. A hormone decides what to keep. When concentration rises, the brain releases vasopressin, which tells the kidneys to reabsorb water instead of passing it on. That is why urine darkens when you are short: it is the hormone working, not merely a symptom.
  3. Your mouth lies a little. Drinking switches off thirst within seconds, long before any of the water reaches your blood. The mouth and throat signal relief on contact, which is why one glass can feel like enough while you are still in deficit.
  4. Thirst lags need. Most people first notice thirst at around one to two per cent dehydration. By then performance has already begun to fall, which is why guidance for sustained activity is to drink on a schedule rather than on sensation.

The familiar eight-glasses-a-day rule is a folk target, not a research finding. Requirements vary with body size, climate and activity, and a meaningful share of daily fluid arrives in food. Healthy kidneys regulate this well unaided.
